In line with government expectations, we ensure National Curriculum entitlements across all subject areas. However, we are also aware that this type of education has failed to engage our youngsters and that we need to be more responsive and creative if we are to give these pupils a positive experience of education prior to the world of work.
We are actively involved in foundation learning and we are a vocational assessment centre. We offer vocational accreditation at level 1 in horticulture, construction, hospitality and catering and small animal care. We also offer on-line accreditation in literacy and numeracy through City & Guilds and functional skills, literacy, numeracy and ICT through Ascentis.
The school provides a balanced curriculum which includes: English, Maths, Science, Humanities, ICT, Design & Technology, MFL, PE, Outdoor Education, Art and PSHE. In Year 11, boys have the opportunity to take GCSE examinations in English, English Literature, Science, Maths, ICT and Art. Entry level certification occurs in English, Maths, Science, ICT and PSHE/Citizenship.
To enable all students to properly access the curriculum, we have an individual learning support timetable managed by a learning support co-ordinator and implemented with the help of personal tutors. Learning support plans focus on individual literacy needs and identify remedial strategies.
