Expectations - Management of Behaviour

The emphasis and focus of the school is to constantly praise and reward pupils who demonstrate improvement in behaviour and a positive attitude at school. For the majority of pupils for most of the time this brings about a positive and purposeful attitude towards each other and staff at school.

To encourage better behaviour and consideration to others, the school operates a positive rewards system. Points are awarded for good behaviour to a maximum of 250 points a week and are exchanged for money credits in pupils’ ‘tuck’ accounts. There is a special weekly award for best or most improved junior and senior boy.

Occasionally, sanctions have to be employed to deal with unacceptable behaviour. If unacceptable behaviour continues despite using alternative strategies, then discussions with parents, the Head teacher and Local Authority representatives may be necessary.

In the event of wilful damage to - or theft of – property, parents will be informed of the incident and asked to contribute the cost of repair or replacement. A serious breach of school rules such as violent behaviour or persistent refusal to accept school discipline may result in short-term or permanent exclusion.

There may be occasions when physical management of a pupil is necessary e.g. a sudden unpredictable violent outburst. If staff identify a situation where a child may be at risk of hurting themselves or others, or if his behaviour seriously disrupts good order or causes damage to property, staff may need to undertake physical intervention.

In such situations, staff will be expected to follow school procedures and record the event in the accepted manner. All staff are trained in the use of ‘Team Teach’ restraint procedures. These situations are always managed with sympathy and understanding whilst respecting individual pupils’ rights. The intention is always to use minimum physical intervention to quickly allow individuals to regain their own control.
